TETON RIVER VALLEY RANCH
“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.”
John Muir
Located on a 10-acre site near the Wyoming–Idaho border, this project sits in a high-alpine steppe environment shaped by climate extremes and wide-open views. A horseshoe of some of the most iconic and rugged peaks in the Rockies surround the site.
The design process began with careful site planning to respond to the region’s intense sun, wind, snow loads, and ecological sensitivity. Just a short walk from the Teton River, the flat plains show traces of historic water channels, wildlife, and active migration paths of endangered species—the type of land stewardship opportunity we love to take on.
The clients—outdoor and van life enthusiasts—came to us with a clear and fun brief: “a big barn and a big mudroom, with a little house attached.” The design has evolved through a highly collaborative process, grounded in friendship, shared values, and a sense of adventure.

Our design process is both analog and digital—but fundamentally always rooted in the experience of the site. We’ll reach for the most efficient tools to co-create what the house should look like, including simple paper or lego massing models to quickly eliminate and collaborate toward a mutually-agreed upon path forward.
Cultural context layers over the land’s own story, yeilding ideas texture and color—so the building feels like it has always belonged, rooted in this spot
